The novel was, for the most part, heartbreaking. Tales of shipwrecks and wounded fishermen. Women who killed their husbands and abandoned their families. Children who were lost or sick. People who died. Homes that were destroyed.

In spite of all this devastation, the ending of the novel was beautiful. After struggling to define his faith in God, happiness, purpose, and love, the story’s protagonist experienced a kind of joy that he could not comprehend. The narrator concluded the novel by saying:

“For if a bird with a broken neck could fly away, what else might be possible? Water may be older than light, diamonds crack in hot goat’s blood, mountaintops give off cold fire, forests appear in mid ocean, it may happen that crab is caught with the shadow of a hand on its back, that the wind be imprisoned in a bit of knotted string. And it may be that love sometimes occurs without pain or misery.”

I like the idea expressed here—that of believing in the seemingly impossible, the concept of a faith that sometimes takes precedence over logic or statistics. I experience that kind of faith every day, and it is at times indescribable. As the novel ended I found myself saying a little prayer. “Thank you, Lord, for the blessings you’ve given me. Thank you for allowing me to experience a love free of pain and misery: your love. Thank you for a wonderful husband. Thank you for happiness. Thank you for miracles.”

No, I didn’t garner any relevant final paper topics from The Shipping News. I was given, instead, a much needed reminder of just how blessed I truly am, along with an irrepressible urge to take heart and believe in the impossible.
